Top 10 Reasons for Hiring an Independent Loss Adjuster

The Benefits of Independent Loss Adjusters – and When Professional Claim Support May Help

Why you should hire Independent Loss Adjusters!

Navigating the Complex World of Insurance Claims.

When serious property damage occurs, an insurance claim can involve unfamiliar policy wording, evidence requirements, repair proposals and different claims professionals.

An insurer may appoint a loss adjuster to investigate the circumstances, assess the damage and report within the insurer’s claims process. That professional has not been appointed to represent the policyholder, but their appointment does not itself imply unfairness or bad faith.

A policyholder can also appoint their own claims professional. When Independent Loss Adjusters is appointed, we work for the policyholder rather than the insurer and can help review, organise and present the claim from that position.

When a Policyholder-Appointed Loss Adjuster May Be Useful

Professional claim support can be particularly useful where the property damage is extensive, the evidence is complex, the policy position is unclear or there is disagreement about the repair scope or proposed settlement.

When ILA is appointed, we can help review relevant policy wording, organise evidence, communicate with the insurer and review settlement proposals. The precise support will depend on the circumstances of the claim.

Not every insurance claim requires professional representation, and appointing a loss adjuster does not guarantee that the claim will be accepted, resolved more quickly or result in a higher settlement.

Below are ten practical reasons why a policyholder may decide that professional claim support is worthwhile.

Top 10 reasons for hiring an Independent Loss Adjuster.

1. Policyholder-Side Representation

When ILA is appointed by a homeowner, landlord or business, we work for that policyholder rather than the insurer.

This does not mean we act as a neutral adjudicator between both parties. Instead, we represent the policyholder while applying professional judgement to the policy wording, evidence, damage, valuation and other relevant claim issues.

The practical distinction is who made the appointment, who provides instructions and whose interests the professional is engaged to represent.

Our guide to what “independent” means in an insurance claim explains this distinction in more detail.

2. Reviewing the Full Scope of the Claim

Property insurance claims can involve more than the immediately visible damage. Depending on the policy and circumstances, relevant issues may include buildings damage, contents, alternative accommodation, loss of rent, business interruption or other insured costs.

A policyholder-appointed claims professional can help identify the different parts of the loss, organise supporting evidence and review whether a proposed repair scope or settlement reflects the policy wording and documented damage.

This does not mean that every cost will be covered or that professional representation will produce a higher settlement. Each item still needs to be supported by the policy, evidence and circumstances.

3. Reducing Stress and Saving Time

A significant property claim can involve substantial correspondence, documentation, appointments and decisions at an already difficult time.

When ILA is appointed, we can manage much of the claim administration, evidence organisation and communication with the insurer and its representatives.

The policyholder will still need to remain involved in important decisions and provide relevant information where required, but professional support can reduce the amount of claim administration they have to manage personally.

4. Evidence-Based Claim Negotiation

Disagreement can arise during an insurance claim over issues such as causation, the extent of damage, repair methods, valuation, policy cover or the amount of a proposed settlement.

Where there is a genuine area of disagreement, ILA can identify the specific issue, review the available evidence and explain the policyholder’s position to the insurer or its representatives.

Where appropriate, further quotations, reports or other professional evidence may help clarify the point in dispute.

Negotiation should be based on the policy wording, evidence and supported costs rather than an assumption that every insurer position is too low or every disagreement should result in a larger settlement.

An Independent Loss Adjuster bring their own expert negotiation skills to the table.

5. In-Depth Claim Preparation

Good claim preparation can make it easier for the insurer and its representatives to understand the damage, evidence and amounts being claimed.

Depending on the claim, this can include photographs, reports, repair estimates, invoices, valuations, inventories and other relevant documents.

ILA can help organise this information and identify where further evidence may be useful. Thorough preparation cannot guarantee that a claim will be accepted or prevent every disagreement, but it can help ensure that the policyholder’s position is clearly documented.

6. Early Involvement Can Help Organise the Claim

Early professional involvement can sometimes help preserve evidence, organise the initial claim information and explain what may be required as the process develops.

It can also help the policyholder understand relevant policy conditions, emergency actions and the information being requested by the insurer.

However, not every claim requires representation from the outset, and early appointment does not guarantee a smoother process, prevent later disputes or improve the eventual settlement.

7. Understanding and Responding to Claim Rejection Risks

An insurer may reject a claim where it considers that the policy does not cover the loss, a relevant condition has not been met or the available evidence does not establish an insured event.

A policyholder-appointed claims professional can review the stated reason, relevant policy wording and available evidence and help identify whether further clarification or supporting information may be appropriate.

Sometimes the insurer’s decision will be supported by the policy and evidence. In other cases, there may be a reasonable basis to ask the insurer to reconsider its position.

Professional support does not guarantee that a rejection will be overturned. The outcome will depend on the policy wording, evidence and circumstances.

8. Personalised Service

Every property claim has its own combination of damage, policy wording, evidence and personal or commercial circumstances.

ILA can tailor its support to the individual claim rather than applying the same approach to every policyholder.

This can include discussing the client’s priorities, explaining relevant claim issues, organising evidence and maintaining a consistent point of contact as the claim progresses.

The role of an independent loss adjuster doesn’t end once the settlement is reached.

9. Support Beyond the Claim

Once a claim concludes, there can still be value in understanding what happened during the process and keeping useful records of repairs, valuations and other significant information.

Depending on the circumstances, ILA may also be able to explain practical lessons arising from the claim or identify property-related matters that warrant further professional attention.

If you need personalised advice about purchasing, changing or renewing insurance cover, that advice should come from your insurer or an appropriately authorised insurance broker.

10. Clear Fee Options Before Appointment

Before appointing a claims representative, it is important to understand how the service will be paid for.

Where Independent Loss Adjusters manages and negotiates a claim, our standard fee is 10% plus VAT of the relevant settlement amount.

If you choose an ILA-recommended contractor to undertake reinstatement work, the contractor may cover our fee for the proportion of work they complete. You remain free to appoint your own contractor.

The applicable fee arrangement and service terms are explained before appointment so that you can decide whether professional claim support is appropriate for your circumstances.

Securing Your Peace of Mind

Deciding Whether Professional Claim Support Is Right for You

Professional claim support can be valuable where the damage is extensive, the evidence is complex or the policyholder does not have the time or experience to manage the claim alone.

The potential benefit should be considered alongside the complexity of the claim, the service required and the applicable fee.

A claims professional can help explain the process, organise evidence and represent the policyholder’s position, but cannot guarantee the claim outcome or settlement amount.

What Professional Representation Can and Cannot Do

Appointing a claims professional can give a policyholder a dedicated representative who understands the claim, available evidence and relevant policy issues.

That support can make a complex claim easier to understand and manage, particularly where there are technical issues or disagreement about the insurer’s position.

However, professional representation cannot guarantee that a claim will be accepted, that every disputed item will be covered or that a particular settlement will be achieved.

Customer Testimonials

Feedback From Clients Who Needed Claim Support

When your property claim feels uncertain, it can help to hear from people who have already been through the process. These testimonials show how Independent Loss Adjusters has helped clients deal with insurers, evidence, delays, settlement concerns and the practical steps needed to move a claim forward.

“The insurer was being a nightmare and dragged the case on for months, but in the end, with Glenn’s help and guidance, we received the payout needed to rectify the damage. Without Glenn, we would have only received 20% of the actual costs to restore the damage!”

“Glenn and Sue were very professional throughout and helped me win my claim against Zurich insurance for a bathroom leak. They arranged everything and kept me updated throughout.”

“Chris took a genuine interest in our case and verified all the facts before successfully overturning the insurer’s rejection. Chris continued on our behalf and ultimately successfully managed to recoup both our repair costs and consequential losses.”

“We had a very complex insurance claim which Michael and his team worked tirelessly to resolve. We had zero experience in dealing with insurance companies and we would have been lost without them.”

“Glenn and Sue have been fantastic throughout our claim. Although it has been a very stressful period, it has been relatively easy to communicate with Glenn or Sue, who have always reassured me as time went on. Above all, we are very happy with the total outcome of our claim and can highly recommend ILA.”

“ILA have been fantastic throughout this process. I would highly recommend them.”

These testimonials describe individual clients’ experiences. Outcomes depend on the policy wording, evidence and circumstances of each claim.
