Supporting Business Owners Nationwide

Independent Support for Business Insurance Claims

At Independent Loss Adjusters, we support business owners through complex commercial insurance claims. If your business has suffered a loss through fire, flood, theft or interruption to operations, we work for you rather than the insurer and help prepare, present and negotiate the claim based on the policy wording and available evidence.

From claim preparation to negotiation, we provide nationwide support across the UK for business and commercial insurance claims. Our role is to help organise the claim, manage insurer communication and keep you informed while your business plans its recovery.

What Does Commercial Insurance Cover You For?

Business insurance can include several different types of cover. What applies to a particular claim depends on the policy wording, limits, exclusions and circumstances of the loss.

For property-related claims, cover may include:

  • Damage to buildings and business premises
  • Stock, contents and equipment
  • Fire, flood, storm, escape of water or malicious damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Machinery or equipment damage, where covered
  • Business interruption, including certain loss of income or increased costs of working

Understanding which sections of the policy may respond is an important part of preparing a commercial insurance claim. Independent Loss Adjusters can review the relevant policy wording, damage and available evidence and identify areas that may require further information or clarification.

Common Commercial Property and Business Interruption Claims

Commercial insurance claims can vary considerably depending on the business, property and cause of the loss.

Claims we may assist with include:

  • Fire damage to buildings, stock or equipment
  • Water damage, escape of water and flooding
  • Storm or impact damage
  • Theft and malicious damage
  • Damage affecting stock, machinery or business contents
  • Business interruption following insured property damage

Each claim requires consideration of the policy wording, available evidence, scale of the loss and individual circumstances.

How to Claim on Your Company Insurance

If you’ve experienced a loss, here’s how we recommend handling your business insurance claim:

  1. Notify Your Insurer Quickly

Check the policy’s notification requirements and report the loss promptly. Delays may affect the evidence available or the insurer’s consideration of the claim.

  1. Gather Evidence For Your Claim

Take photos, document the damage and retain all relevant receipts. Clear records can help support the claim.

  1. Appoint Independent Loss Adjusters

Insurers may appoint their own loss adjusters. ILA works for the policyholder and can manage insurer communication, evidence and settlement discussions throughout the claim.

  1. Insurer Communication and Negotiation

We review the insurer’s assessment against the policy wording, evidence and reasonable loss calculations, identifying items that may require clarification or further support.

  1. Review the Settlement Position

We can assess whether the proposed settlement reflects the policy terms, documented damage and supported business losses before you decide how to proceed.

Business Interruption: Assessing the Financial Impact of Downtime

Property damage can affect more than the premises itself. A fire, flood or other insured event may also interrupt trading, reduce income or create additional costs while the business recovers.

Where business interruption cover applies, the policy wording will determine which losses can be considered and the relevant indemnity period.

Depending on the policy and circumstances, business interruption insurance may cover:

  • Lost income during a period of interruption
  • Temporary relocation costs
  • Continuing fixed expenses
  • Increased costs of working to maintain or restore operations

Our independent loss assessors can review financial records, historic trading performance, seasonal trends, continuing expenses and increased costs of working to help quantify a business interruption claim.

Underinsurance and the Average Clause

A significant issue in some commercial claims is underinsurance. Where insured values are lower than the relevant exposure, the insurer may apply an average clause or another policy provision that reduces the settlement.

Independent Loss Adjusters can help review underinsurance issues by:

  • Comparing the insurer’s calculation with the policy wording and available valuations
  • Reviewing how reinstatement costs and income cover have been assessed
  • Explaining how an average-clause or underinsurance reduction may affect the claim

If an underinsurance reduction has been applied, we can review the calculation, policy wording and supporting valuations and raise a challenge where the evidence provides reasonable grounds.

Three Common Types of Commercial Insurance Claim

Understanding your claim type helps determine the strategy. The main types of commercial claims we handle include:

  • Property Insurance Claims – Damage to buildings, stock, or contents.
  • Liability Insurance Claims – Injury to third parties or damage caused by your business.
  • Business Interruption Claims – Loss of income or increased operational costs due to downtime.

Whether your business is retail, hospitality, industrial, or office-based, we’re equipped to manage your unique claims challenges.

What Clients Say About ILA’s Claim Support

When an insurance claim becomes delayed, disputed or difficult to manage, it helps to hear from people who have already been through the process. These comments are from clients who asked Independent Loss Adjusters to help them deal with insurers, evidence, claim decisions, settlement offers and repair concerns.

“After having a claim rejected for a fallen tree on our house, I had given up all hope of getting anywhere! However, Chris was extremely helpful in fighting this for us and taking to the Financial Ombudsman to get it overturned and payment made.”

“Extremely professional, reassuring whilst giving a wonderful, friendly service during a personally difficult time. Very thorough in the site assessment and good follow-up.”

“The insurer was being a nightmare and dragged the case on for months, but in the end, with Glenn’s help and guidance, we received the payout needed to rectify the damage. Without Glenn, we would have only received 20% of the actual costs to restore the damage!”

“We were at the end of our tether with the communication problem with the insurance and their appointed assessor. We contacted ILA and got an independent assessor Glenn Weatherall and his assistant, they couldn't do enough for us."

“I received excellent and speedy advice from Michael at ILA - I was hesitant to call in but feel so much better that I did, highly recommend!”

“All dealings with ILA were fantastic, timely, compassionate and steadfast in fighting for your rights, above those of the Insurance Companies. I dread to think how badly the outcome could have been had I stuck with the insurance companies own Loss Adjuster.”

These testimonials describe individual clients’ experiences. Outcomes depend on the policy wording, evidence and circumstances of each claim.
