UK Weather Crisis: Floods, Snow and How Independent Loss Adjusters Can Help

New Years Weather: Flooding, Snow and Ice

The Unrelenting Force of Nature

In early January 2025, parts of the UK experienced a difficult combination of heavy rain, flooding, snow, ice and very low temperatures. Communities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland faced travel disruption, flood warnings and hazardous conditions.

The severe weather affected homes, roads, schools and public services. It also created significant problems for property owners dealing with flood, water and weather-related damage.

Major Incidents Highlight the Scale of the Crisis

On 6 January 2025, major incidents were declared in Leicestershire and Lincolnshire as widespread flooding affected roads, homes and communities.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service received hundreds of calls involving flooded properties, vehicles and evacuations. In Lincolnshire, emergency services and community response teams were also dealing with road closures, flooded properties and people needing assistance.

Unyielding Weather Patterns Across the UK

A Deep Freeze: Winter’s Icy Grip on Northern England and Scotland

Snow, ice and low temperatures affected many parts of northern England and Scotland. During the early hours of 6 January 2025, Loch Glascarnoch in Scotland recorded -13.3°C, making it the coldest night of the winter in the UK at that point.

The Met Office continued to warn of snow, ice, frost and below-average temperatures during the following days.

Battling Heavy Snow and Icy Warnings

Weather warnings for snow and ice covered parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and England during the cold spell. The Met Office warned that snow, ice and freezing conditions could affect travel and create hazardous untreated surfaces.

England Struggles Amid Airport Closures and Travel Chaos

Severe weather also disrupted air, road and rail travel. Manchester Airport temporarily closed its runways because of snow, while flooding affected major roads and railway lines in several parts of England.

The M5 in Gloucestershire was among the roads temporarily closed because of flooding, while rail passengers faced delays and cancellations on affected routes.

Emergency Services and Volunteers Respond to Severe Weather

emergency services Evacuated 50 children from Edenham Primary School after floodwaters rendered the surrounding roads impassable.

Children Evacuated from Flood-Hit Lincolnshire School

Around 50 children were safely evacuated from Edenham Primary School near Bourne after surrounding roads became impassable because of flooding. Community response groups and people with suitable vehicles supported the evacuation.

Flood Rescues and Severe Warnings in Leicestershire

Widespread flooding also affected Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Fire crews responded to flooded homes and vehicles and carried out dozens of rescues during 6 January.

A severe flood warning was issued for part of the River Soar system. A severe flood warning means there is a danger to life, so residents in affected areas were advised to follow official instructions and evacuation advice.

Schools, Homes, and Healthcare Under Pressure

Schools Closed: Education Disrupted by Severe Weather

Hundreds of schools were reported closed across affected parts of the UK as snow, ice and flooding made some premises and surrounding roads unsafe. The closures disrupted the return to school after the Christmas and New Year break.

Power Outages and Emergency Declarations: Communities in Crisis

The winter weather also placed pressure on infrastructure and public services. Power cuts affected thousands of properties, while flooding created additional challenges for emergency responders.

On 6 January 2025, East Midlands Ambulance Service declared a critical incident. The service said significant patient demand, pressure within hospitals and flooding across the East Midlands had contributed to the escalation.

Health Warnings Issued: Protecting the Vulnerable Amid the Cold

The UK Health Security Agency also issued amber Cold-Health Alerts across England during the January 2025 cold spell. The alerts reflected the potential impact of low temperatures on health and health services, particularly for older people and those with existing health conditions.

UKHSA advised people to check on friends, family and neighbours who might be more vulnerable to prolonged cold weather.

The Long Shadow of Climate Change

Extreme Weather and Climate Change: A Warming World’s Impact on UK Winters

The January 2025 weather should not be attributed to climate change alone. Individual weather events are influenced by several atmospheric and natural factors.

However, climate change provides important long-term context. The Met Office reports that the UK has become wetter over recent decades and that a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, increasing the potential for heavier rainfall.

UK climate projections also indicate a greater risk of heavy and prolonged precipitation, particularly during winter.

Adapting to the Future: Government Pledges and Evolving Preparedness

The severe flooding also highlighted the continuing importance of flood resilience and property-level preparedness.

During 2025, the government set out further proposals to reform the way flood-defence projects are funded, including changes intended to make investment more accessible to rural, coastal and less well-resourced communities.

Long-term flood resilience will involve a combination of public infrastructure, local planning, property protection and effective emergency preparation.

Finding Support in Challenging Times

Independent Loss Adjusters

Independent Loss Adjusters Assist With Insurance Claims

If flooding or severe weather damages a property, personal safety should come first. Follow emergency-service advice and do not enter floodwater or a damaged building if it may be unsafe.

If flooding is imminent and it is safe to do so, official guidance recommends moving people, pets and important belongings to safety. Gas, electricity and water supplies should only be isolated where this can be done safely. Never touch an electrical switch while standing in water.

Our flooded house guide explains the immediate safety, evidence and insurance-claim steps in more detail.

If an insured property has already been damaged, Independent Loss Adjusters may be able to provide policyholder-side claim support. Depending on the claim, our work can include:

  • Damage and evidence review: Reviewing available information about the property damage and supporting evidence.
  • Policy and claim review: Considering relevant policy wording and the insurer’s stated position.
  • Insurer communication: Communicating with the insurer and its representatives where we are appointed to do so.
  • Settlement review: Reviewing proposed repair scopes or settlements against the policy wording, available evidence and supported costs.

Professional claim support does not guarantee that a claim will be accepted or that a settlement will increase. The outcome will depend on the policy wording, evidence and circumstances of the claim.
