Under Siege From Relentless Weather

Storm Babet brought severe weather and widespread flooding to parts of the UK between 18 and 21 October 2023. Heavy and persistent rain affected England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with some of the most severe impacts seen in eastern Scotland and parts of England.

The flooding damaged homes, businesses and infrastructure and led to significant disruption in several communities. This article looks back at some of those impacts and explains what policyholders can consider if they are dealing with flood or storm damage to an insured property.

The Widespread Property Damage

Storm Babet brought exceptional rainfall and serious flooding to several parts of the UK. In eastern Scotland, some locations received 150 to 200mm of rain, while the Midlands recorded its wettest three-day period on record at the time.

Homes, businesses, roads and other infrastructure were affected. Floodwater also damaged buildings, contents and personal possessions, leaving many households and communities facing a difficult recovery.

The Devastation in Chesterfield

In the picturesque town of Chesterfield, the relentless rain and rising waters have caused widespread destruction. Homes that have stood for generations now stand inundated by muddy floodwaters. The town’s historic charm has been marred by the overwhelming impact of this relentless storm. Many Chesterfield residents are left to cope with the heart-wrenching loss of not only their homes but also their precious memories and cherished possessions.

The Ravaging of Dingwall

Dingwall and the wider Highlands were affected by the severe weather associated with Storm Babet. Travel disruption and safety concerns were significant across northern Scotland, while local authorities and emergency partners moved from their emergency response into recovery once conditions improved.

Angus: A Region in Distress

The Angus region has faced a severe battering by the storm. The beautiful coastal towns and countryside have been marred by extensive flooding, resulting in significant property damage. Families in Angus are facing the daunting task of rebuilding their lives, with some losing their homes and possessions to the unrelenting waters.

Brechin: A Community in Need

The historic town of Brechin, with its charming architecture and close-knit community, is grappling with the aftermath of Storm Babet. Flooded streets, damaged buildings, and lost livelihoods have left the residents of Brechin facing immense challenges as they work together to rebuild their beloved town.

What Policyholders Can Do After Flooding

If your property has been flooded, personal safety comes first. Do not return until the emergency services or relevant authorities say it is safe to do so.

  • Do not turn gas, electricity or water supplies back on until they have been checked and confirmed safe where required.
  • Contact your insurer as soon as reasonably possible and ask what it needs from you.
  • Take photographs and videos of the damage and visible flood-water levels before major cleaning or removal starts, where it is safe to do so.
  • Keep damaged items where practical until you understand whether the insurer wants to inspect them. Where an item presents a health or safety risk, record it clearly before disposal where possible.
  • Keep receipts and records for reasonable emergency measures, temporary work and other claim-related expenditure.
  • Avoid starting substantial permanent repairs until you understand the insurer’s position, unless urgent work is needed to make the property safe or prevent further damage.

How Independent Loss Adjusters Can Help

After flooding, property insurance claims can involve extensive damage, drying, reinstatement costs, contents losses and questions about the policy. Independent Loss Adjusters can act for the policyholder and help assess, document and present the claim.

Where ILA is appointed, we can review the policy position, organise relevant evidence and communicate with the insurer and its representatives. Our role is to help the policyholder understand the claim and present the insured loss clearly.

Assessing and Presenting Flood Damage

Independent Loss Adjusters can assess and quantify insured property damage and help prepare evidence to support the claim. This may include repair scopes, reinstatement costs, contents losses and other insured items where relevant.

We can also review insurer correspondence and settlement proposals, raise evidence-based questions and negotiate on the policyholder’s behalf. Any settlement remains subject to the policy wording, supporting evidence and individual circumstances.

Swift Action and Support When You Need it Most

After serious flood or storm damage, early organisation can help make the claim easier to understand and manage. ILA can review the available evidence, policy wording and damage position, then help the policyholder identify what information may still be required.

For more information about this service, see our storm damage insurance claim help page.

Supporting Communities With Insurance Claims Assistance

Storm Babet demonstrated how quickly severe weather can affect homes, businesses and entire communities. For policyholders, the insurance claim may continue long after the floodwater has gone.

ILA can help with the insurance side of that recovery. This can include reviewing the damage and policy wording, preparing evidence, assessing reinstatement costs and communicating with the insurer.

The support required will depend on the individual claim. ILA cannot guarantee that a claim will be accepted or that a particular settlement will be achieved.

Customer Testimonials

Feedback From Clients Who Needed Claim Support

Property insurance claims can quickly become confusing when there are delays, unclear decisions or disagreements over the settlement. These testimonials show how Independent Loss Adjusters has helped clients feel better informed, better supported and more in control of the claim process.

“Mike and Team are Absolutely Fantastic. We in no way could have managed our insurance claim in the way that he has been able to. For any future claims I would use Mike from the start.”

“Michael dealt with our case in such a very professional manner, providing excellent advice and valued assistance. What really mattered here was Michael had a real connection to us, offering true empathy to our case and real sincere desire to help us to the best of his ability.”

“My wife (Carly) and I (Stuart) can not thank you enough for what you have done for us. I would recommend you and your team to any one.”

“The insurer was being a nightmare and dragged the case on for months, but in the end, with Glenn’s help and guidance, we received the payout needed to rectify the damage. Without Glenn, we would have only received 20% of the actual costs to restore the damage!”

“All dealings with ILA were fantastic, timely, compassionate and steadfast in fighting for your rights, above those of the Insurance Companies. I dread to think how badly the outcome could have been had I stuck with the insurance companies own Loss Adjuster.”

“From the first call they just knew what they were doing. They were easy to talk to, always kept me updated and nothing ever felt like too much trouble.”

These testimonials describe individual clients’ experiences. Outcomes depend on the policy wording, evidence and circumstances of each claim.
